Portrait of someone I knew

Woman's portrait in watercolour © Evelyn Howard 2010

Rima was working for my brother in Malaysia as a domestic maid. She was from Indonesia and I met her when I visited my brother. She has left my brother’s employ a long time ago. Like all foreign maids, life was hard. She worked very long hours, and was separated from her family members, who were in Indonesia, while she went to Malaysia to work for 2 years.

When I asked her to be my model, she obliged. She was glad to have a break from her daily routine. I took a number of photos and when I came home to Australia, I printed them and sent her a set. I wonder if she still has them, and if her life is better now.

A lovely sketch, Evelyn. She looks a little sad and resigned. Enjoy the week ahead.☺

I like how she emerges from the whiteness of the page. There's something serious and sad about your brief connection with her.
