Around Melbourne, Australia

Footbridge near Rod Laver © Evelyn Howard 2010

My friend told me about a shortcut home on my bicycle, but I found this footbridge instead. Part of the bike route was closed due to construction, and I ended back on my normal bike path. Anyway, Rod Laver Arena (indicated by the arrow in the photo) is the main venue for Australian Open in tennis.

Bridge over the Yarra River. I took this photo from Southbank, a lovely area with restaurants and retail outlets. There is a lovely pedestrian promenade to people watch outdoors, or just to hang out with friends on the grass – a very popular place for tourists, as well as the locals.

I was intrigued by this structure in the foreground. Is it a bridge?  And what are those bags? I looked around and could not find any info on this. In the background is a footbridge over the Yarra River. This is also in Southbank.

Here is a close-up. Bags with plants? I guess when the water level rises, these bags are submerged. A good self-watering method?

There was a wall behind me so I had to tilt my point and shoot to capture the other bit of the structure (on the right). Were the 2 parts connected at one time? Was it a bridge? Was it a jetty? Maybe someone who finds this post knows more about this, and can shed some light.

Happy Sunday. Do check out other bridges at Sunday Bridges.

Ooh, great bridge! I've always wanted to go see the australian open. Today's the last day of the national tournament here in Japan :-)

One of the many things I am enjoying about blogging is coming across things never seen before. Even with all our traveling, we just can't see it all, so it's super seeing new scenes through the lens' of others. Those bags really are a curiosity. Good post for Sunday Bridges. Hope you're having a pleasant weekend, Evelyn.

PS. You asked if the bridge I posted is always blue? The photo hides it well, but it's the gaudiest thing of revolving colors... but the lights are off during the day. :-D

That first bridge is really cool; it looks like it goes on forever!

Now you have my curiosity piqued with those hanging bags! I wonder what they are for?!

Self-watering? Ha ha... What an idea!
Too bad they didn't choose to grow paddy - could have made a good harvest next year! Who knows? Ha ha...
