One of our most memorable meals in Kyoto was an udon (Japanese noodle) lunch, recommended by the proprietor of our hotel.
That’s my husband and I in the first photo. Like all tourists, we wanted some real Japanese experience and was especially thrilled when we seemed to be the only tourists eating there :).
The queue was rather long when we arrived, but we were told to expect that.
When we got closer, there were seats…
Still waiting for a table, we checked out what our people were eating. The little section to the left is the kitchen. See next 2 photos.
Lots of activities in the little space.
Sweet little jars for condiments
We had no problem ordering since we were told by the hotel proprietor what was good. Our cold udon came with a special sauce. Some tempura accompanied the udon.
The only problem I had was slurping, which I did not do very well. I need more practice :). The meal was おいしい/oishii/delicious.

Dear Evelyn&Honey,
The first photo is the most impressive, of course;)!! I love udon, too. おいしい!! Thank you for wonderful pictures.
Cheers, Sadami
I love everything Japanese! Food of course! design, books and especially illustration. I like their traditional architecture too. If I could have a long vacation, I would spend it in Japan :-D
Looks fantastic! I love Japanese food. The restaurants around me must think I never cook, I am there every week.
Yum, looks so delicious :)
Looks so delicious! And what a fun experience. Thanks for sharing! I love visiting these places vicariously through your blog!
Awww, that top photo of you two is fantastic! And your udon lunch looks yummy-licious ;-D
Udon is my absolute favorite noodle, especially the "te-uchi(手打ち) udon" like you had. Handmade noodles are really good! I'll have to go find it in Kyoto the next time I'm there :-)
1: I see a handsome couple.
2: I see a happy you.
You must have enjoyed your Japanese experience.
Udon is my son's fav.
