Malaysian rice dish

My brother took me to eat Nasi Lemak a few days ago. It is a very popular  dish found all over the country, and eaten at breakfast, or any time of the day.

The very basic Nasi Lemak consists of rice cooked with coconut milk,  boiled egg, some peanuts, ikan bilis (a local variety of dried anchovies) and sambal (chilli concoction which looks like a chutney).

We had a plate of fried chicken to share. The chicken was very nice – the skin was crispy and the meat was tender…

I went to a friend’s house a few days later, and he served us Nasi Lemak.

From the top of the photo: sambal, chicken curry, boiled egg, peanuts, squid curry and beef curry. We helped ourselves to the food…

I took a bit of everything (except the squid)… It was delicious. The plate looks like a banana leaf. Traditionally the dish is served on, or wrapped in banana leaf.

Well, not so scenic in the above photos, but here’s one I hope you will find interesting…

Malaysian corridor © Evelyn Howard 2011

A corridor shared by shops on the left. There is a shop on the left after each arch.

The text in the arrow at the top says “First floor” (I didn’t investigate what’s available up there). The next sign says that the pawn shop indicated by the arrow, offers gold and Rolex watches… Any takers?

Further down the corridor, you can see some colourful wares. It’s an Indian shop selling all sorts of colourful things… (I’ve got more photos of this for the next post.)

Scenic Sunday, Hope you are having a nice weekend.

Malaysian food doesn't look that dissimilar to Indonesian or Filipino. Here there is no sambal, as such, although some regions like Bicol do have hot spices. If that sambal is anything like the one I know, that is a huge amount in that top dish! I can only take it in tiny amounts. Even after 25+ years in Asia, I just can't do this for breakfast... Nice post, Evelyn. Hope you're having a marvelous time!
