Kookaburra, San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

Kookaburra bird in acylics © Evelyn Howard 2011
Acrylics on canvas paper, 8.27 x 11.69 inches

I keep calling him “Tommy”, because it makes me think of a boy who is pleased with himself, and is thinking of the next mischief to get into…

Do you know the Australian nursery rhyme? Here goes…

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gum drops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra!
Leave some there for me

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra!
That's not a monkey that's me

Kookaburra sits on a rusty nail
Gets a boo-boo in his tail
Cry, Kookaburra! Cry, kookaburra!
Oh how life can be

I love that song - we used to sing it in a round.

He does indeed look like a cheeky little boy doesn't he? Fun :)

Yes, I do know that song! It was one of the popular songs on Barney the Dinosaur program on TV.
But I didn't know the bird was so pretty! Love your drawing :D

You all really do have some fabulous bridges out there. This is such a nice photo. The silhouettes against the water, bridge, and sky make for a fabulous capture...and your painting of the kookaburra is lovely. You are so talented. genie

Fabulous!!

Every time I hear the word "Kookaburra" (not one we hear often in Canada), I start singing the song in my head! Nice to learn more verses.

Tommy is charmingly gorgeous and mischievous!

That's an awesome painting and a lovely rhyme...had not heard of such a bird...so many things to know of our very own earth and nature.

Tommy is so cute! Love his color components. I’m ignorant of Australian nursery song, it sounds lovely. Nice shot with such low light.

The Kookaburra song is one of the songs that my mother (she died ten years on Christmas Eve at age 68) sang to us kids as bedtime songs. She was an American, transplanted in her 20s to Japan. I wonder where she learned it. I didn't know till I grew up what a Kookaburra was, or that it was an Australian song.

What a fine view of the bridge, Evelyn. «Louis» likes the lighting in this shot.

(He apologizes that he is so late in visiting...)

You did put the mischief in Tommy's eye! And I agree with Louis, the lighting on this iconic bridge is stunning. My best wishes to you and yours for this holiday season for you and your honey in your new home, Ev@
