Maiko (apprentice Geisha)

Evelyn Howard, Acrylics, 12 x 16"

I am taken back to my time in Kyoto with this painitng. This beautiful maiko in her early teens was dancing with another on stage. They were both very graceful and it was a beautiful performance. A few days later, I saw a geisha in a taxi. She was probably on her way to work. Although I could only see part of her, I thought she looked very poised. And very distant.

I am intrigue. I wonder about about the individuals behind the costumes and make-up...

Dear Evelyn,
Your painting is so beautiful that struck me. Awesome. Regarding maiko and geisha, they have a sad history, even though I have not checked it fully. Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Best wishes, Sadami

You've caught their elegance in this painting! The bright colors are fabulous :-)

Happy Christmas Eve!

@ Sadami: Thanks Sadami, I was reading a bit about their background. It's quite sad and dates back a long time. In modern day Japan, it is amazing that some women choose this path... according to an article I read, they can be quite rich...

Have a great Christmas and a happy new year!

@ Kaori:

Thanks Kaori. I tried to represent the same colours in the costume as the photo I took, because I read that that what they wear represent the stages of the career. The Maiko costumes are indeed very attractive and bright.

Have a Merry Chrismas and Happy New Year!!!

A glimpse from the back is equally satsfying from the front!
Love the grace of Maiko and its vibrant Kimono!

A very evocative painting, Evelyn. To my mind, it captures both the beauty and the loneliness of the Geisha.

A very belated response to your comment here. No, that image is courtesy of astronauts in orbit!

Your work is beautiful, Evelyn.

Yes, I also wonder what it must be like behind the makeup. Hmmm.

Evelyn, isn't "intrigue" exactly what it was all about with the maiko/geisha? Stunning painting, Evelyn...
