A few creative projects

Happy New Year 2013.

I’ve been away for a bit, been busy with creative projects as usual. Hope you are all doing ok! Here are some recent projects.

Journaling/Sketches around Melbourne

I purchased some blank books and started drawing the covers myself. I have completed 2 so far… The one on the left uses mainly text, while the one on the right has a festival theme. They are both completed with ink, paint and collage.

I have just completed a concertina book – what fun.

It was not difficult:

Part 1: Gluing  the pages

Part 2: Completing the book

I hope everyone has been well, and have had a great start to the new year.

People sketches

Sketch of old lady

Sketch of girl with pony tail

I love sketching people. Here is Grandma (not mine!), who was seen eating at a foodcourt (left), and a sweet barista at a cafe.

The days are zipping by. It’s Paint Party Friday again.

Another coffee shop drawing, plus new sketching and writing books

Coffee shop sketch

More urban sketch… umm I mean coffee shop sketch.

I had 2 coffees and a huge carrot cake – seen in the drawing. The cake was was so pretty that a few people around the table were drawing it, which meant I had to wait for them to finish before I could chomp it down.

Paint Party Friday

By the way, here’s a bit of exciting news. I have been busy designing a range of drawing and writing books. They will be hardcover, with printed linen and acid free paper. Here is a sneak peak at some designs:

More on this later – watch this space!

Have a great weekend.

Plein air drawing–braving the weather!

Hobart Plein Air

I say plein air, but actually I was in a restaurant looking out across the water. It was freezing cold, and I was very glad to be indoors. Excuse the distortion (bad camera angle!), but then my drawing is distorted anyway!

Melbourne Plein Air Sketch

More distortion. For this drawing, I was sitting in the cold outdoors with a friend. Brr…

Wearing warm jacket drawing

My friend, Eveline was nice and warm in her “Michelin” jacket.

Mulled wine and coffee

A reward afterwards. Mulled wine and cake in a warm coffee shop.

Drawing warm up exercise

Hands Warm Up Excercise

At life drawing sessions, we often get to do warm up exercises, starting from a few 2 minutes poses, then a few 5 minutes poses.

But away from life drawing, it never crossed my mind to do warm up exercises. When my art teacher asked if we do warm up exercises, the answer was “no” from most (if not all) of the students.

According to my teacher, hands are the next best thing to having models. He suggested that we draw them from different angles and positions.

Other warm up exercises that I have come across includes contour drawing, quick sketches, scribbles and drawing 3-dimensional forms.

(I am making a mental note to do warm up exercises - I forget most of the time.)

Do you warm up? What is your favourite technique?

Learning to draw, and keep drawing

IMG_1930

The other day, a friend told me that she wanted to be able to draw. I asked her what she was doing about it and she said she didn’t know how to proceed. That got me thinking about how drawing has now become such a big part of my life. But some time ago, I was like her. I had not yet begun drawing and I wanted to learn to draw.

So how does one learn to draw? And how does one keep that habit and continue drawing? Here are 7 steps (in no particular order) that I can think out.

1. Just start

Drawing does not need to involve a complex scene or some complex objects. Even if we draw a cup, a ball, a box or even a pencil, it is good practise.

2. Practise, practise, practise – 15 minutes a day

I read a lot about drawing and nothing compares to practising. Often, the theory about drawing that I have read a while ago only became clear sometime later. It is great when I am drawing and the clarity strikes, and I think “aha, now I understand what the author was trying to say”. My drawings are not as good as many that I have seen around, but with practice, I am improving every time.

I came across a suggestion in an art book to set aside a least 15 minutes a day to draw. I think it’s a great idea. (Unfortunately it is not something I do. I feel guilty that I have forgotten about this advice until I started writing this post!)

3. Attend a class (Duh, everyone knows this…)

Unless you are someone who enjoys researching, and have the time and the inclination to learn on your own, you might like to consider joining a class. If you are a beginner, you will gain valuable information that will provide you with the foundation that is essential in art such as proportions, perspective, etc. And if you are not a beginner, you may learn new ways and new techniques that may help push your drawing even further.

4. Join a drawing group/draw with friends

I used to go out to draw every other weekend with a friend. We would draw and exchange news about what was happening in our separate worlds. It was fun and it help to me to keep up my drawing. Unfortunately, when my friend started working weekends, I lost my drawing buddy.

Drawing alone is not as fun and requires discipline. So I started looking for like minded people, and found a sketching group. Now the group meets every week, and I have my drawing buddies again.

5. Carry a sketchbook

When I have a sketchbook with me, I will draw more. I will draw when I am waiting for someone, or when having coffee. Carry one - It doesn’t need to be a fancy sketchbook, any book will do. Mine is a small A6 book that is light and does not take up much space in my bag, and I carry a few pens.

6. Participate/Submit your images to memes

There are groups on the internet that I join to connect with fellow artists. Examples of these are blogs such as Creative Every Day and Paint Party Friday. One of my favourite is Illustration Friday which has a weekly theme, which gives me a challenge and stretch my imagination. These weekly participation helps me to keep drawing, and the work of others are often educational and inspiring.

7. Have fun/letting go

I used to try to make every page of my sketchbook “count”, end would get upset if a drawing didn’t look good. I have covered up bad drawings by pasting blank paper over them. I have seen friends rip out pages of unsuccessful work.

I was seeking perfection, but I have learnt to let go and just enjoy the moment. Splash ink or paint to improve your drawing. Add other materials to turn it into a collage. Just have fun. At least that way, it becomes a positive experience and you will look forward to drawing, and having a great time again.

These are a few steps that help me. I am sure you will have more to add to my list. What else would you suggest?

Simple tools for outdoor painting

What do you take when you go out to draw or paint?

DSCN6690

I like to travel light, so here are my tools – a small watercolour pad, travel watercolour set, a piece of rag (in this case, an old sock), 2 pens, a water brush plus a small bag, which is just big enough for all the tools.

DSCN6691

My favourite pens are 0.1 and 0.8 pigment liners. The water brush is handy for dabbing on colours.

Watercolour, Acrylics and Piercing…

Evelyn's Watercolour

Another quick watercolour completed last week

I don’t think I have shared this – a quick acrylics painting completed last year

And finally, one of my 3 pieces completed with pin painstakingly piercing a piece of A6 size paper. They were exploratory pieces, which I was hoping would take me somewhere…. but that hasn’t happened yet.

Happy Weekend.

Watercolour from the country

I had a little time away in the country last week. There were lots of walking, bike riding and sketching. Here are a few pieces from my sketchbook.

I visited Georgina at her home last week, and I was given a tour of her garden. If I had looked closely, I am sure that she has green thumbs.

Cup of Tea

Red Mug by Evelyn

I spent the afternoon at a friend’s office. While she worked, I drew. Then we went to a movie, and later to her house for tarot card reading. Nothing professional, just us with an instruction booklet and some cards;trying to “see” what lies ahead. It was fun.

Hope you are having a nice weekend.

The simple life

I have been a bit busy catching up with family and friends, and haven’t been drawing or painting. So, for Paint Party Friday, here are pieces I completed in Tai O Fishing Village in Hong Kong mid last year.

House in Fishing Village

A skinny 4 storey house. The top (green section) of this house was used as a laundry room.

House in Fishing Village

I wonder if this was a house. It resembled a surf rescue station. It was low tide, so there was no water below the house/building.

House in Fishing Village

A beautiful old house which I think can be restored into a very lovely place.

Now to a totally unrelated topic…

Arrowroot Chips.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in Malaysia in late January.  My Mom and Sis-In-Law were busy in the kitchen making arrowroot chips, which is a popular snack made for the festival.

Arrowroot Chips

I help a little, but I was also taking photographs. Here is the finished product (above) which is crunchy and stores very well in airtight containers. If you are curious about how it is made, keep scrolling down. It is quite easy.

Arrowroot Peeling arrowroot

The arrowroot bulbs were washed and their skin peeled.

Slicing Arrowroot Arrowroot slices

When using a slicer like the one above, leave the arrowroot stalks intact to be used as a handle while slicing.

Frying Arrowroot chips

Without adding any flavour, the slices were then deep fried in oil (I guess you can add some flavour if you like, but in this case, none was used).

 Arrowroot chips

All done.

Happy Weekend.

Ipad Art

Time is zipping by this week. I have “lost” a day, because I crossed the international time line coming back to Australia. In my current jetlagged state, I thought I have missed Paint Party Friday, but obviously I was wrong.

Today’s post is about some Ipad art I completed for my husband’s presentation a few months ago in New York. The finished artwork was exported to Jpeg format, which he projected on a big screen, together with other slides and video. The feedback I got was positive, since a picture can sometimes say so much more than words.
